A few years ago, an entire slum district of the Indonesian city of Malang was about to be demolished and all the inhabitants were resettled. However, a group of students from a university in Malang came up with the idea of giving the whole area a fresh and eye-catching splash of color, hoping to attract the attention of tourists. I painted the whole thing (called Jody Pan). Shortly thereafter, tourists spotted this colorful rainbow village on the island of Java.

Malang is a stop before visiting Bromo. Most tourists come to Malang, Indonesia by train because of the good connections. Just before the final stop in Malang, cross the bridge right next to the rainbow village of Jodipan. And that’s why tourists got to know this village and it quickly became popular. Visit the colorful rainbow village
Each Jodipan house is a different color. After each new corner is a mural that transforms from a simple minion to a full 3D tiger. Decorated with colorful umbrellas and other decorations, it has an artistic atmosphere. There is a bridge over the river that connects the rainbow part with another part.
Entry into the village can be made from different directions and a local pays a small entry fee of his 3000 IDR (approximately US$0.35). Most of them make a living selling food and drink to tourists.
Now when we talk about tourists, we mainly mean Indonesians who want to see this area with their own eyes. It takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour in Jodipan.
Kampung Biru Arema (Blue Village)
On the other side of the railway bridge is Malang’s blue village called Kampung Biru Arema. The entire new project was painted blue in April 2018. If you know the blue city of Chefchaouen in Morocco, this is a smaller version of it.
At the time of our visit in September 2018, the village was completely unknown to tourists. We stumbled upon the Blue Village by chance. Take lots of pictures with the locals, chat with Google Translate and have a great time.
Like Jodipan, the area is full of recycled small artworks and beautiful murals. Near the iron bridge there is a small viewpoint called a tree house. It wasn’t ready during our visit, but it’s ready now. Journey time at Blue Village is approximately 1 hour. I couldn’t find an entrance fee, so if you want to help the locals, buy something.
